It is native from Mexico to Panama and can reach 70 feet, although it remains between 6 and 8 feet in most residential environments. In North Carolina it is grown as a houseplant. It prefers an average warm temperature , moderate light but not direct sunlight and high humidity.
Variegated varieties will need more sunlight than darker green varieties. Leaf mist helps to increase humidity in dry interiors. Sturdy support is essential to prevent stem breakage. Prune or replant if needed in spring and wipe dust from the leaves regularly. Propagate by layering or cutting off shoots. In its native habitat it begins life as a terrestrial plant, becoming epiphytic once it comes in contact with a sturdy tree that can be climbed. While it does not typically produce flowers or fruit in interior landscapes, it can produce an edible fruit that is said to taste like a cross between a banana and a pineapple.
